THE TWO SIDES OF THE JAPANESE ECONOMIC MIRACLE

This paper analyzes post-war Japanese society, examining the positive and negative aspects of what is known as ‘the Japanese economic miracle’. It starts with the reconstruction of Japan after the Second World War and takes notice of the factors that made it possible, namely cultural factors. This is followed by an account of the costs involved in the extraordinary economic recovery that followed the war and the consequent changes in Japanese society. Finally, the positive aspects brought about by the economic growth are analysed.
