COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVENESS OF THE UNIVERSITY TEACHERS A CONSTRUCT DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION

This study aims to show how the construct of "communication effectiveness of the university teacher in the classroom" was developed and validated. Firstly, the items for the questionnaire were collected from an exploratory study of Rego & Sousa (1998a,b), based on the critical incident technique. Secondly, the questionnaire was applied to a sample of 132 students and 69 teachers of the University of Aveiro. The results show the following: a) four communication dimensions (empathetic behavior; pedagogical conscientiousness; courtesy; "just reading of the texts") emerged from the principal component analysis; b) these dimensions explain approximately 80% of the variance on a communication effectiveness global score given by the individuals; c) empathetic behavior is more valued by students than by teachers, with these valuing more the pedagogical conscientiousness.
