OLD PEOPLE BY THEMSELVES:PERSONALITY VARIABLES AND DEATH REPRESENTATION

The aging phenomenon is a politic, sociologic, and also a psychological problem. In Portugal there are not many psychological studies about old people. In this study, we try to understand several personological variables, such as optimism, neuroticism, life satisfaction, loneliness and death anxiety in relation to old people. Some scales have been answered by 104 old persons who have also answered three open questions about dying and death. Through analysis of variance significative differences were found on genre but not on age. The open questions have been analysed by content analysis and showed that the representations about dying and death by old people are in general positive.
